When my daughter was born with a medically complex condition, I needed a job that offered the flexibility to care for her. I realized being a REALTOR® involved elements I already loved—making friends, serving others, continuously learning, and having the flexibility to engage with a community close to my heart: the special needs community.
I thought I would spend my life in the medical field, but everything changed when my husband Randal and I welcomed our daughter Payton. Her arrival forced me to find an alternative source of income that allowed me to care for her the way she deserved. Though I was scared, the situation led me into real estate, and I’m so glad it did!
My healthcare journey started in the Cardiac Cath Lab, caring for people who had heart attacks. I was frequently on call for emergencies, easily working 50 to 60 hours a week. Despite this, I finished my degree in Public Health and found I had extra time. I thought getting my real estate license would be a fun “hobby.” I found it to be fun and I seriously considered doing this full-time. Yet, I continued believing healthcare was going to be my lifelong career (I did love that work as well).
While working on my MBA, life took a different turn when Payton was born with Trisomy 18, a rare genetic condition that required special care. I couldn’t balance my job in the Cardiac Lab and Payton’s care, so I left the medical field and decided to take a leap of faith into real estate.
At first, I was surprised by how complicated real estate could be. Understanding real estate law felt harder than learning the intricacies of the human heart! But not only did I quickly understand the processes and laws, I also found joy in meeting new clients, many of whom became lifelong friends.
It’s deeply satisfying to use my communication and negotiation skills to help people achieve homeownership. I’ve worked with people with all sorts of budgets and pride myself on working hard to get them a house that fits their needs. Plus, real estate offered the flexibility I needed to take Payton to her appointments and therapy sessions—something I couldn’t have done in a traditional job.
My hard work and passion paid off, and I built a successful real estate business. Randal later joined me, and together, we made a great team. He focuses on many behind-the-scenes tasks and manages our rehab properties while I handle the daily operations, which include marketing, negotiations, showings, and other aspects of the business. Along with Payton, now 11, we’ve welcomed two more children—Bailey, age 6, and Bryce, age 1.
Late in 2019, my resilience was tested again when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was overwhelming to face chemotherapy while trying to run a business and care for small children. Thankfully, Randal and my mother supported me through it all, and together, we overcame the challenge.
Though I didn’t stay in the medical field as I originally planned, I’ve found other ways to channel my passion for helping others. Payton’s journey has inspired me to get involved in the special needs community. For eight years, I’ve helped organize the Night to Shine prom for teenagers with special needs through the Tim Tebow Foundation.
One of my favorite organizations is Xtraordinary Joy, which provides research grants to scientists at the University of Florida for rare chromosome disorders. Recently, with X.Joy, we organized an inclusive summer camp for kids with special needs, neurodiverse children, and neurotypical kids, ensuring that everyone was welcome, no matter their background or condition. My dream is to one day create an inclusive school where kids with and without special needs can learn together; no one is turned away regardless of how much help they do or don’t need.
When I’m not working or volunteering, I love spending time with my family. I 1000% love being a mom, and I cherish every moment with Payton, Bailey, and Bryce. We enjoy water activities, playing pickleball, and simply being together. Becoming a full-time REALTOR® was a leap of faith, but it’s given me a life filled with purpose and joy.
Over the years, my ability to advocate for my clients and negotiate effectively has secured them great deals, and I take pride in that. Negotiation is one of my specialties, a skill I have honed as a Special Needs Mom. I’m committed to getting my clients the best possible outcome while ensuring a win-win for both parties. If a deal isn’t good, I’m honest about it and will present better options.
I specialize in residential real estate, but I also work with investors due to my experience with investments. My husband, Randal, and I have renovated around 20 homes and offer our expertise to our customers. We guide clients through the renovation process, helping them maximize their investment –– whether it’s getting their home ready for the market or personalizing their new home.
I strive to make every transaction stress-free and enjoyable for my clients. Many have told me how much fun it was to work together! My passion for learning, especially when it comes to changing laws and regulations, helps me stay informed and ensures a smooth experience for those I serve.
Sincerely,
Kristen Thompson
